When Michael Cacoyannis asked Mikis Theodorakis to compose the soundtrack of the film “Zorba the Greek”, nobody could predict that the main music theme would be totally identified with the principal character, surpassing in fame both the novel and the film; as a matter of fact, the eponymous ballet suite by the prestigious composer unifies, in the character's figure, three top artists: Kazantzakis, Cacoyannis and Theodorakis, who can be viewed as three rivers with the same Cretan beach as their delta: there where Zorba dances his famous syrtaki, teaching the mysteries of life as an authentic expression of the Greek soul.
