City of Athens Chorus
The City of Athens Chorus explores the rich African musical tradition and its evolution through spirituals and jazz. The history of spirituals dates back to the 18th century in the communities of African American slaves, in spontaneous gatherings where participants used to sing, dance and chant, often reaching a state of ecstasy. Their music combines elements of European hymns and African rhythms, much like jazz, which originated in New Orleans in the early 20th century. In this enjoyable and diverse programme, original works and transcriptions by major composers inspired by this great tradition will be performed.
