City of Athens

Athens is the historical capital of Europe, as it has never stopped being inhabited since the Neolithic Period up to now. The climax of its long, fascinating history came at the 5th Century BCE (at the age known as the ‘’Golden Century of Pericles’’), when its values and culture exceeded the city’s geographical borders and acquired global glory. Political thinking, theatre, arts, philosophy, science, architecture, and so many more forms of human intelligence reached their epic peak in a unique -in terms of global history- timing of their simultaneous intellectual rise.

Therefore, Athens has been the cradle of Western civilization, while infinite Greek words and concepts such as democracy, harmony, music, mathematics, technology, gastronomy, architecture, logic, eros, euphoria, and hundreds of other examples, enriched many languages and inspired many different cultures.

Throughout many centuries, the city has been occupied by various conquerors, who left their traces in its monuments of special prestige and charm, creating a rare historical mixture. In 1834, Athens was named capital of the modern Greek state at the aftermath of its classical past; but during the two centuries since then it has evolved into a contemporary metropolis of incompatible charm and high interest.

Nowadays, a visit to Athens offers a unique experience. A ‘’journey’’ through a history of 6,000 years! The ‘’initiation’’ to great monuments and artistic masterpieces from Antiquity and the Middle Ages, as well as to the architectural heritage of the 19th and 20th centuries. The sense of ‘’warmth’’ and uplift created by the spectacular light that the sky of Attica generously provides. The enchanting beauty of the natural scenery of the broader region (the sea creating lace-shaped coasts, as well as the mountains surrounding the city). The pleasure of modern infrastructure and the special liveliness of its inhabitants.
